Whole Wheat Pizza Dough

I promised awhile back that I would post a recipe for whole wheat pizza dough, which is based off a Joy of Cooking recipe.  This makes enough for two regular-sized (12-inch) pizzas.  So either have a party and make both, or freeze them in a lightly greased bag until you are ready for some hot, crusty pizza 🙂

You will need…

  • 1 1/3 c warm water
  • 2 1/4 t active dry yeast
  • 2 T olive oil
  • 1 T salt
  • 1/2 t oregano
  • 1/2 t basil
  • 1/2 t garlic powder
  • Shake or two of red pepper flakes
  • 1 c whole wheat flour
  • 2 to 2 3/4 c all-purpose flour

Then you…

  1. Combine the warm water with the yeast in a large mixing bowl.  Allow to sit about 5 minutes, or until the yeast is dissolved.
  2. Stir in the olive oil, salt and spices.
  3. Mix in the whole wheat flour.
  4. Add enough all-purpose flour so that the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the mixing bowl.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough until it is not sticky and is smooth and elastic.
  6. Lightly grease a large mixing bowl and transfer the dough to the bowl, turning to lightly coat.
  7. Cover with plastic warm and leave in a warm place until doubled, about an hour to hour and a half.
  8. Cut the dough in half and either freeze or use!
