Aunt Joan’s Figure Cookies

Holiday cookie making is a serious business in my family.  Back in college, I spent a weekend down in TX learning all the ropes.  This is one of my favorites, because it isn’t too sweet and you can get everyone involved.  My aunt normally triples the recipe!

You will need:

  • 1 c sugar
  • 3 c flour
  • 1 t salt
  • 1 t baking soda
  • 1 t nutmeg
  • 1 c butter, room temperature
  • 1 egg, well-beaten
  • 1 c sour cream

Then you…

  1. Sift together the sugar, flour, salt, baking soda, and nutmeg.
  2. Add the butter and work together using your hands.
  3. Add the well-beaten egg and sour cream.  Cut in using a butter knife until forms a soft dough.
  4. Refrigerate an hour (or overnight) until chilled through.
  5. Roll out a small amount to roughly 1/4-inch thick on a well-floured surface.  Cut with your favorite cookie cutters.  Re-refrigerate unused scraps to re-chill.
  6. Bake at 400 for about 10 minutes on a parchment-lined baking sheet.  Remove when just starting to brown.  Allow to cool.

To frost, you will need:

  • Powdered sugar
  • Milk
  • Liquid coffee
  • Almond flavoring

Then you…

  1. Add milk, coffee, splash of almond to sugar until you have a thin spreadable icing consistency.
  2. Frost and allow to set.  Frosting will firm up!
